Plastic surgery has gone too far.

Plastic surgery is a loosely used term to represent a range of different procedures that 'correct' apparent imperfections in body structure. What are the types of plastic surgery available to people, what are the proven risks, and what evidence is there that plastic surgery really improves the self-image of recipients ?

  2. Plastic surgery has many risks. These include infection, blood clots, delayed healing, tissue death, excessive/unexpected bleeding, anesthesia risks (shock, respiratory failure, drug/allergic reactions, cardiac arrest, coma, death), pneumonia, loss of sensation, paralysis or nerve damage. The likelihood and severity of these risks also depends on what type of surgery you recieve.

There are many types of plastic surgery. These include blepharoplasty (surgery of the eyelids), forehead lifts, mentoplasty (surgery of the chin), otoplasty (surgery of the ears), rhinoplasty (surgery of the nose), rhytidectomy (surgery of the face or facelift) and botox. The main reason for plastic surgery is to increase self confidence.

I don't believe that plastic surgery is worth the risks it involves.

I fully agree with what James and Apeksha have said about plastic surgery, though they have both not commented on one of the questions asked.

What evidence is there that plastic surgery really improves the self-image of recipients?

Men and women are becoming very sensitive about their appearance and turning to plastic surgery.
Surveys have shown most people who will have plastic surgery are very happy on their outcome. If a patient asks for something that is very unrealistic for example rhinoplasty they are most likely not going to be happy with their results. On the other hand people who ask for simpler things are most likely going to be very happy. There are some people who have a disorder called ‘’body dysmorphic disorder’’ allowing them not to be happy with a good result.

I am responding to all posts relating to this subject by A.C,James and Apeksha
Yes, I completely agree that plastic surgery is not the way to change and "improve" yourself but I feel nobody has talked about the rewards of plastic surgery (thats if it the surgery is a success)
These are just some of the benefits from plastic surgery

    1. The large boost in self-asteem, optimism and confidence which can greatly affect a person's life in a positive way.

    2. Many studies by independent researchers revealed that more "attractive" people are often assumed to be "more honest, more intelligent, more capable and more successful" says Lucas (2008)

    3. For some patients, plastic surgery is necessary ,for example if a patient has a necessary eyelid lift, then they are rewarded with improved eyesight. Another example is of women who need to have their breasts reduced. With surgery, the patients would no longer have to suffer through the daily pain from the weight of the breasts.

I still beleive despite the benefits and rewards plastic surgery is not worth the risk.

As I agree with all posts, as Sunny said, plastic surgery is not the way to go. As with what Apeksha (May 25, 2009 11:55 PM)about liposuction is a plastic surgery where fat is removed. As most people say, plastic surgery is not the way to go. As I agree with everyone who said this, a good example of not going with this example of this is the Biggest Loser. This is a show where people who are getting their lives changed around. A good example of this is Season 4 of the Australian Biggest Loser, Bob, who is 55 years of age, started of at 167.8 kilos and managed to lose 87.6 kilos to be the overall winner.

When Apeksha explained the risks of all these types of plastic surgeries, “Infection” came up a lot and I thought, why infection? So I’ve researched and here is what I’ve come out with.

The risk of infection after cosmetic surgery is less than 1 percent and antibiotics decrease this risk dramatically. But according to plastic surgeons, if it does occur, it’s highly serious.

Humans who smoke, take steroids or have heart conditions are more likely to receive infections from surgery. The more you lose blood and the longer the surgery is, the further likely it is, that you will receive infection/s.

The plastic surgery lowers the strength of you immune system, thus making it harder for your body to fight off an infection.

I recently saw in the news a story about a woman who was shot in the face by her husband. Half her face was missing and she couldn't walk down the street without children pointing at her and calling her a monster. Thanks to plastic surgery used for the right reasons this lady now looks nearly normal, can speak, eat and lead a normal life.

I am refrenceing to the post made by Adam Shuttleworth and half agree with it plastic surgery can be a good thing and can help people but on the flip side it can ruin lives probaly the best example of this is Micheal Jackson he was origonali an African-American but now... plastic has ruined his life
(that is a yes vote just in case you did not realize)

by looking at everyone's post on the dangers of getting plastic surgery, it would be pretty bad to get those injuries. In my point of view, I think that plastic surgery should be banned unless it is really needed.

  14. Part B

I am going to be referring to a post made by Lachlan Kingston. He stated that Michael Jackson had ruined his life with plastic surgery, but it was not the plastic surgery that ruined his life it was because of him. He chose to have plastic surgery knowing that there could be some side affects

    Side effects of plastic surgery:

    •Baggy skin
•Skin may change colour and fall off
    •Fluid retention
    •Shock
    •Infection
    •Burning
    •Fat clots in the lungs
    •Pain
    •Damage to organs if punctured
    •Numbness at the surgery site
    •Heart problems
    •Kidney problems
    •Disability
    •Death

Plastic surgery is for those who want it and Michael Jackson wanted it so it wasn't plastic surgery's fault it was his fault he ruined his life.
You could argue that he was tempted by plastic surgery because of his big nose and his popularity as a star.

Plastic surgery has gone too far.
I am responding to posts from Apeksha and James. Plastic surgery is procedures to treat injuries or deformities by operative manual and instrument treatment.
I believe it depends of where you’re getting plastic surgery (e.g. nose) and how much you are getting done. If you only get small amounts of plastic surgery then there will be less chance of something going wrong and your confidence will also be boosted. If you get large amounts of plastic surgery then you’re putting yourself in more risk and you would be better off choosing an alternative like laser or Botox instead.

In reference to the risks metioned above by the 'bloggers' I have to add my affirmative to the question. After research in this particular area it has become plainly obvious, that the risks in various types of plastic surgery.
While the information previous to this statement may have mislead you, I am not against plastic surgery to those who make the choice. However I do strongly advise against it as it is riskful and dangerous, and can have disaterous consequences. In the occasional circumstances were it is vital, I agree, but most of the time, the chances permanent damage may occur are very high.

  17. Part A - Part A – Plastic surgery has definitely gone too far. An example: There is a Korean woman who was obsessed with plastic surgery. She had operation after operation so that, when she returned to Korea (she was living in Japan), her parents could not recognise her. Her face was left BIG and it was disfigured from all the surgery, but she still thought herself beautiful when she looked in the mirror. She has said that she now wants her original face back.
Another example is Donda West (Mother of Kayne West, hip hop star) who died. They think it is from lots of breast reduction and tummy tuck operations that she had.

I agree with what J@mE$ has said, but I would like to add on to what he has put. Some other kinds of plastic surgery are Buttock Augmentation (Butt enlargement), Gynecomastia (male breast tissue) reduction, Laser hair removal, Laser vein treatment, Laser skin resurfacing, Tummy tuck, and Neck lift. More risks of plastic surgery are need for secondary surgery and dissatisfaction with results. Plastic surgery is not necessary and is not worth the pain and dangers of doing it.

  19. Part B

Referring to many of the above comments; I don't disagree with plastic surgery, but I do disagree with the way people use it. It should be used for medical issues or car crash incidents only. Whatever happened to no matter what you look like you are beautiful on the inside and that's what really counts? People using plastic surgery to alter there appearance is wrong, wrong, wrong! God made us the way we are, we should not change our appearance for our own vanity.

  20. As this Part B I am simply agreeing to the blogs made above. After further research, I find that it is true plastic surgery can be used to save the dignity of victims of an accident that has transormed their body, but continuing overuse can, and in most cases will carry risks that could kill or seriously injure. So in conclusion I woud like to sum up the affirmative. Plastic surgery HAS gone too far.
